What is Agile based learning?


As the name of the methodology suggests, an Agile based learning refers to a learning environment that is designed to be highly responsive and adaptive, focusing on incremental steps, continuous feedback, and encouraging learning from mistakes. According to Wikipedia, a learning environment built on the Agile principles should be “defined by a high level of scalability, content adaptability and connectivity to existing organizational structures and software infrastructure”.

Thus, starting from this, why would you implement Agile based learning within your organization? Well, first of all, companies should develop learning plans that address the current changing business needs. In an Agile learning environment, the training process can change in the face of new technologies or new requirements in terms of skills and knowledge, turning the training programs into adaptive and valuable learning opportunities.

Then, people need to learn and work collaboratively, to be part of a learning community, to make the most of social learning, and even to learn in an environment that is similar to their day to day activities such as taking part in discussions on WhatsApp and other Social Media platforms. The first one refers to the ability of sensing the future needs, by collecting feedback and insights from a multitude of sources and coming up with the bigger picture based on that.

When you feel that you’ve done this the right way, you can move to the next step, that of taking the actual decision, taking into consideration the fact that your decision might need to change based on a variety of factors. And this is exactly what an Agile methodology promoted, to be able to react and adapt effectively to the changes around, to know how to face challenges and come up with solutions.

Studies and reports show that in the context of a major event, i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic, the adaptive learning organization working with an Agile methodology, found it easier to react to the major changes in comparison to non-adaptive companies which felt lost in the fact of so many new requirements and business changes.

The final step is centered around searching for innovative solutions all the time, looking for the novelty, experimenting new methods, practices and approaches.

So, what should be the characteristics of these adaptive learning organizations functioning on an Agile methodology? First of all, they should encourage adaptive leadership, while leveraging technology and encouraging employee engagement, by means of an Agile learning environment.

They should be up-to-date with everything, have the abilities to respond to change and to find opportunities in the novelty, deal with challenges with innovation and an open mindset and never forget about the importance of an Agile learning environment.
